09:28 am - It Was All Good Just a Week Ago...
Not sure if anyone's heard this song by Jay-Z and Too Short but the title seems apropos for what's going on today. Just over a week ago, New Orleans was the way I remembered it last year. It was today that the worst natural disaster in American history began. I've watched network coverage over the past week (how could you not?). There were times that I wanted to cry, times when I was angry, and times when I was just empathetic towards the survivors. I wanted to make a post criticizing the government for it's lack of response to the post-Katrina New Orleans, saying how this should be a wake-up call to all America about the plight of inner-city poverty; I wanted to big-up New Orleans mayor and criticize the federal government for having a chunk of NO's National Guard overseas; I wanted to say alot in this post but I find right now, that would be pointless. There's enough blame to spread around. Everyone can get a piece. Bush, FEMA, the Pentagon, etc. All I can really do is continue to pray for those who are still stranded and those who've been displaced indefinitely, if not permanently. Our mayor has offered to take in 1000 families for however long they need to be here. The amount of aid, I'm sure, will be phenomenal but how do you replace, relocate, and restart? God help all those who now have nothing.
Life is not to be taken for granted. We only have one. And just like that, it can be lost. The heart grows heavy when we think of the thousands that may be dead and in the water in NO. But God is still real and He still is in the soul-saving business. I saw one Pastor of an NO church that said this may be a call for NO to "slow it's roll." In times like these, many who didn't have faith or weren't practicing their faith, return to church. This shouldn't be an emotional thing. People are looking for answers to tough questions. Answers may or may not come, but ultimately our faith should be in Christ Jesus. Yeah, that's a preacher's answer but it is true. It's difficult to accept but it's true. Many don't want to hear it but it's true. God is trying to tell us something. 9/11, the Indonesian Tsunami, Katrina, African genocide. The Lord is trying to get our attention. Are we listening?
